Cupping Therapy
Cupping is a modality of Chinese Medicine involves placing cups on various areas of the body to create suction and facilitate healing with improvements in blood flow.
It involves creating suction on the skin using a glass or plastic cup. Negative pressure is created in the cup either by using fire to burn the oxygen and create a vacuum or the remove oxygen via a manual pump.
Wet vs. Dry Cupping
In “wet cupping,” the skin is pierced underneath the cup(s), allowing better blood flow and unblocking stagnation. Small amount of blood flows into the cup and is later safely disposed. While this process may look scary, it is not necessarily painful. The sensations reported by most patients is a sense of “strange relaxation”.
“Dry cupping” doesn’t involve piercing the skin. The cup is simply left on the skin for a period of time.
